Negotiation Skills for Business- sky-wolf.net

Every time we engage in conversation with another individual we are generally negotiating a view, discussion or action. Everyone has different filters from which they perceive the world or their surroundings. These filters are developed throughout one?s life as they grow from a child to an adult. Some of the main influences that can develop one?s filters are parents, friends, family, social environment, religion, school and experience. As these filters are molded every individual brings a different view point to a negotiation or business discussion. Understanding the angle or view of an individual with whom you are negotiating is key to laying the foundation to work towards a viable solution.

One of the more widely known methods of understanding human negotiation psychology is the Thomas-Kilman Conflict Mode Instrument, also known as the (TKI). This model asserts that an individual?s behavior falls along two basic dimensions: assertiveness ? the extent to which the individual attempts to satisfy his or her own concerns and cooperativeness ? the extent to which the individual attempts to satisfy the other?s person?s concerns. This instrument then places an individual into five different style methods when it comes to dealing with conflict.

The first negotiation style is competing.no cost date ideas. Competing is an assertive and uncooperative, power-oriented style. Most individuals that fall into this category tend to pursue their own interests at the expense of other?s using whatever methods they can to win the negotiation. The next style is collaborating. Collaborating is both assertive and cooperative. When collaborating, an individual attempts to work with other individuals to find a solution that fully satisfies the concerns of both. What Is Comprehensive Auto Insurance?. It involves digging into an issue to identify the underlying concerns of the two individuals to find an alternative that meets both sets of concerns. Collaborating between two individuals can take the form of exploring a disagreement to learn from each other?s insights, resolving some condition that would otherwise have them competing for resources, or confronting and trying to find a creative solution to their conflict.

The next style is compromising. Compromising is generally right in the middle of the assertiveness and cooperativeness dimensions. When compromising, parties look to seek a mutually acceptable solution that can benefit all parties involved. Compromising might mean splitting the difference, exchanging concessions, or seeking a common ground position. However, compromising can also mean that both parties are giving up something to meet on the middle ground and this is not always a positive.

Another type of style is avoiding. Avoiding is unassertive and uncooperative. When avoiding, an individual does not immediately pursue his or her own concerns or those of the other person. The individual is generally side-stepping the true conflict at hand. They generally find ways to withdraw or postpone an issue to avoid a threatening or intense situation. The last style of the five mentioned in TKI model is accommodating. The accommodating style is generally unassertive and cooperative. Generally, an individual that has an accommodating style will neglect his or her own concerns to satisfy the concerns of others. An accommodating style will just accept the view or stance of others and does not try too hard to push their own objectives onto others.

Once an individual identifies what method of negotiation they often fall into, then they can begin to understand what some of their strengths and weaknesses may be during a negotiation. All the different styles or methods have different strengths and weaknesses associated with them.

Competing can be valuable at times when a decisive action is needed and that individual is not afraid to take control of the situation and make an immediate decision. However, some of the negatives of this style are that a lot of the competing individuals always fight for influence and respect. They may not even have the best solution or not know the answer but often push their opinion on others and act more confident that they feel. This style or method can also cause those around you to inquire less about information or opinions and everyone will be less likely to learn from the negotiation or conflicts.

Collaborating seems to be one of the more effective negotiation methods. The main strength of the collaborative style is that they generally find integrative solutions and adhere to the concerns of both parties because they understand that some items may be too important to compromise. This style can also be very good at merging insights from a variety of people with very different perspectives on an issue or problem. This method can also be viewed as a style that still is able to accomplish all their objectives without rolling over the other parties involved. They are able to gain commitment by incorporating everyone?s concerns into a consensual decision.

The weaknesses in this style are fairly limited. However, every negotiation or conflict is different so there will always be times when one method will be better suited for that negotiation.Tips For Free Dating Online Profiles. The weakness in always collaborating during a negotiation is that it can take a lot of time and effort. There may be situations where you do not have the luxury of time and effort. Some negotiations don?t require advanced solutions or the time it can take to understand the ultimate goals and viewpoint of every individual involved in the negotiation.

Everyone has heard the old saying that it is always best to compromise. However, when truly analyzing this method more in depth that may not always be the case. In a compromise all parties involved are giving up something to help the other achieve their goal. Even in a compromise where the results are considered to be Pareto optimal, individuals would still have to give up some of their ultimate goal to have all the others achieve the optimal position for all parties involved. This style can also lead some to unintended costly compromises of principles, values, long-term objectives, or company welfare. The main benefit of this style as many are aware is that it often satisfies the needs of all parties involved in the negotiation. It can also be a good way to achieve a quick resolution to a complex issue.

Avoiding generally has more of a negative connotation to it than some of the other negotiation styles. However, there can be at times, some advantages to the avoidance method of conflict. This can be a viable way to solve a conflict or negotiation if the potential costs of confronting a conflict outweigh the benefits of its resolution. It can also be used if an issue is not important enough to address and time will be wasted if the negotiation about the issue even begins to ensue.

Last but not least in the methods of negotiating is accommodating. Accommodating can often help a negotiation in the future because if one accommodates to others? needs initially they may be viewed very favorable right away by the others involved. Accommodators are also good at reading situations and can realize when they are wrong. They often can allow better positions or decisions to be considered, able to learn from others and demonstrate that they are caring and reasonable to others needs. However, if one is always accommodating then they may be sacrificing many of their beliefs or ultimate goals just to appease the other parties involved.

After one begins to understand the method or style he or she may fall into then it is time to understand the some of the steps needed to reach an agreement. The first step is to understand everyone?s goals or objectives. After one is able to understand the other parties motives than they can begin to understand the needs of each individual and starting negotiating towards a common ground. A key in beginning to uncover an individual?s needs and form a common ground is to start to ask some open ended questions.

After gaining a strong understanding of the other parties needs then we can begin to understand how closely their needs fall in line with our objectives. In a lot of situations you can start by gaining agreement on a collaborative effort to solve the problem and fulfilling each party?s needs. Then once trust has been established and the other party understands that you are not only searching to obtain your own objectives but also helping them to reach theirs it will become easier to negotiate more of the greater details.

The next step after understanding the other party?s needs and working towards a common ground is to start surveying the options available to you. An option can be a possible agreement or part of an agreement that can satisfy either party?s objectives. By beginning to explore different options both parties will be able to see different solutions to the problem coming to the table. When you create different options you are create value to the negotiation and building blocks to move the negotiation further down the continuum.

Most of the best negotiations are those in which a number of options have been explored. The first resolution to a conflict is not always accepted and not necessarily the best option for all parties involved. The more options that are generated, the greater the chance that one of them will mutually and effectively satisfy the differing needs of all parties involved. Often, by understanding each other?s needs, one can begin to formulate some possible ways to execute a strategy that better solutions and give you some more creative bargaining power.

The key behind developing options in a negotiation is to take organized approach at understanding each parties needs and creating a range of options that can fulfill most of them. To do this one must always come to a negotiation with an open mind. If you do not try to understand the other individual?s viewpoints then you will never be effectively working towards a strategy that will fulfill both of your goals. The more options you begin to create, the more room or leverage you will have in that negotiation. To create these options you have to continually remind yourself of the needs and common grounds of the other party and also remember to take into account differences in perception or the filters that were mentioned in the beginning of this paper.

The next items to understand in creating options are timing and risk. Some individuals enjoy the rush of risk and have to make tough decisions in a limited amount of time while others cannot stand the idea of it. Everyone has a different tolerance for risk and they are also different on the speed in which they operate, take action and make decisions. When dealing with any of these scenarios in a negotiation the best action is to try and accommodate the timing involved in the decisions that have to be made.

According to Roger Fisher and Danny Ertel, authors of Getting Ready to Negotiate, when people have several of something, they value the last one somewhat less than those that came before. Fisher and Ertel also state that differences in the marginal value to each party, of some of the goods under negotiation, can create opportunities to improve the overall value they each receive. There is no guarantee that these value creating trade-offs will work in every negotiation. However, if one strives to create good options, prepare in advance, and carefully consider opportunities that create value, then possibilities will become available.

As described by William Ury in his book, Getting Past No, an independent standard is a measuring stick that allows us to decide what a fair solution is. Some common standards include: market value, fair and equal treatment, laws, precedents that have been established in the past. Standards can be utilized when one begins to work or negotiate with a new customer. By establishing certain standards it can help to form the common ground in the negotiation that was mentioned earlier in the paper. Without setting standards the negotiation can have no boundaries and will only make it more difficult to come to a viable solution.

Negotiations always differ in complexity and content. Understanding the different style or methods used by different individuals will help to identify their needs and wants. After understanding the needs and wants it is then time to form the common ground. Once common ground is established in the negotiation then it is time to present the options that will help all parties involved achieve their most viable solutions. Keeping an open mind and always trying to understand the argument from the other individuals? viewpoint will always help achieve the main objectives in a negotiation. A good quote by John Lubbock encompasses a lot about negotiations, ?what we see depends mainly on what we look for.? By keeping an open mind during any negotiation one may be able to find new possibilities that he or she did not even know existed.

Journalists escape as Syrian military pounds rebel areas - World ...

Syrian forces shelled an opposition stronghold in Hama province, killing 20 people, on Tuesday and hit rebel-held parts of Homs, activists said, as two wounded foreign journalists trapped in the city were reported to have been smuggled safely to Lebanon.

President Bashar al-Assad sent units of an elite armoured division, which is led by his brother Maher, into Homs overnight, activists said. Tanks with the words "Fourth Division Monsters" painted on them moved close to the besieged Baba Amro district.

French journalist Edith Bouvier and British photographer Paul Conroy, both wounded last week in an attack in Baba Amro, were now safe in Lebanon, a diplomat and opposition sources said. It was not clear how they escaped.

In Hama province, security forces bombarded the town of Helfaya, a hotbed of protests in the uprising against Assad.

Activists said the 20 deaths of Sunni Muslim villagers there were among at least 100 killed in the province in the past two weeks in revenge for rebel Free Syrian Army attacks on security forces commanded by members of Assad's minority Alawite sect.

Media restrictions
The reports could not be independently confirmed. Syrian authorities tightly restrict media access to the country.

Opposition groups say hundreds of civilians have been killed or wounded in the siege of Baba Amro and other rebellious districts in Homs, where terrified residents are enduring dire conditions, without proper supplies of water, food and medicine.

Syrian forces on Tuesday launched the heaviest bombardment in their three-week assault on Baba Amro, activists said.

Assad, projecting an aura of normality in a land ravaged by 11 months of conflict over his right to power, decreed that a new constitution was in force on Tuesday after officials said nearly 90% of voters had endorsed it in a referendum.

Opposition groups and Western leaders seeking Assad's removal denounced Sunday's vote as a charade that diverted attention from the violence in Homs and elsewhere.

'Barbarism'
Assad's government had "broken all the limits of barbarism", French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said.

"And when I see the Syrian president paraded around this voting station in Damascus for this phony referendum, it makes you deeply indignant," he told RTL radio.

Juppe said he felt "immensely frustrated" at difficulties in obtaining security guarantees to enable wounded civilians and Western journalists to be evacuated from Homs.

American reporter Marie Colvin and French photographer Remi Ochlik were killed in Baba Amro on February 22 in a strike on a house in which Conroy and Bouvier were wounded.

The Syrian Arab Red Crescent did manage to evacuate three people from Baba Amro on Monday, but not the foreign reporters, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said.

Armed insurrection
The outside world has proved powerless to halt the killing in Syria, where repression of initially peaceful protests has spawned an armed insurrection by army deserters and others.

"As long as we have not halted the massacres, we are impotent, but we are not inactive," Juppe said.

He told the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on Monday it was time to refer Syria to the International Criminal Court and warned Assad he would be brought to justice.

Foreign powers have argued over whether to arm Syrian rebels trying to resist Assad's forces, but there is little appetite in the West for any Libya-style military intervention.

Russia and China have used their vetoes to protect Syria from any action by the UN Security Council, where Western and Arab powers had sought backing for an Arab League transition plan under which Assad would voluntarily relinquish office.

'Give rebels weapons to defend themselves
Qatar joined Saudi Arabia on Monday in advocating arming the Syrian rebels. "We should do whatever is necessary to help them, including giving them weapons to defend themselves," Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim al-Thani said in Oslo.

Assad says he is battling a foreign conspiracy featuring "armed terrorist groups" and al-Qaeda militants, while pressing ahead with political reforms toward greater democracy.

His opponents scorn his calls for dialogue as meaningless while Syrian security forces are violently repressing dissent.

The Syrian leader says the new constitution will lead to multiparty elections within three months.

The document drops a clause making Syria's Baath party the leader of state and society, allows political pluralism and limits a president to two seven-year terms.

But this restriction is not retroactive, implying that Assad (46) and already in power since 2000, could serve two further terms after his current one expires in 2014.

The opposition dismisses the reforms on offer, saying that Assad, and his father who ruled for 30 years before him, have long paid only lip service to existing legal obligations. -- Reuters

Relatives of Titanic officer seek return of letter

(AP) ? The descendants of a surgeon who died on the Titanic nearly 100 years ago are appealing for a benefactor to purchase a soon-to-be-auctioned letter he wrote from the doomed ship ? and to return it to the city where the vessel was built.

A two-page note John Edward Simpson wrote to his mother days before the ship sank in April 1912 is to expected to fetch at least $50,000 at the auction later this week in Long Island, New York.

Simpson's great-nephew John Martin said Sunday that the family can't afford to buy it, but would love to see it back in Belfast.

"It would be great if a donor or benefactor could be found who would purchase and return it to Northern Ireland for public display," he said.

Simpson's letter, dated April 11, 1912, is written on notepaper headed RMS Titanic and is addressed to his mother, who was living in Belfast.

In the letter, Simpson, 37, said his cabin was larger than the accommodation on board theTitanic's sister ship the Olympic, where he had previously worked. He also complained that he had found one of his trunks unlocked and that some money had been stolen from his pocketbook.

The surgeon, who treated second- and third-class passengers, signed off: "With fondest love, John."

The letter was brought ashore at Cobh (now called Queenstown), Ireland ? the Titanic's last port of call before the ship set sail for America. It was dispatched to Simpson's mother, Elizabeth, who lived on Belfast's Dublin Road

Three days later, he died along with 1,500 others after the ship struck an iceberg.

Martin said his family had held onto the letter for generations, but that Simpson's 81-year-old daughter-in-law gave it to a Titanic enthusiast in Holland 15 years ago. The family lost track of the letter until learning it is to be auctioned by Philip Weiss Auctions.

Simpson's story will form part of a new Titanic Belfast visitor attraction opening in Belfast next month ahead of the 100th anniversary of the sinking.

Martin said the letter provided a rare insight into the life of one of the ship's officers.

"There are references within the letter which give a bit of humanity to the man who died, and he did die bravely," he said. "It puts a human face on what could be another statistic."

An account of the last moments of the Titanic written by 2nd officer Charles Lightoller, who survived the disaster, is going on sale in the same auction.

In his letter, Lightoller describes Simpson walking calmly along the deck with other officers as the ship sank. Lightoller wrote: "They were perfectly calm in the knowledge they had done their duty,"

He continued: "We exchanged the words, 'Goodbye, old man.' This occurred shortly before the end and I am not aware that he was seen by anyone after."

Lightoller's letter is expected to fetch $20,000 at the same auction on March 2.

The iPad heading battle?between Apple and Proview Technologies has jumped from China to the U.S. as a brand brand new legal case accuses Apple of committing rascal in 2009.

Proview?s Taiwanese subsidiary, Proview Electronics, well known mostly for creation mechanism monitors, filed a censure in Santa Clara County Superior Court on Feb. 17, accusing Apple of employing the lawfirm Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge to begin a association that was shaped with the solitary role of purchasing the heading for the ?iPad? name on its behalf.

That association was called IP Application Development and whilst it wasn?t owned by Apple, it was you do Apple?s bidding, Proview pronounced in the California lawsuit. Proview also accuses IP Application Development of not disclosing that it was posterior the iPad heading as an deputy of Apple, according to the lawsuit.

Apple officials weren?t accessible Friday for criticism on Proview?s U.S. lawsuit.

READ THE DOCUMENT: Read Proview?s U.S. legal case agianst Apple Inc.

The previous lawsuits in in in in between Proview and Apple over the iPad heading have been filed in China and centered on a 2006 agreement in in in in between the two firms.

Apple has pronounced it purchased the iPad name heading from Proview, whilst Proview has argued it never sole the iPad name to Apple. Rather, Proview has argued in the Chinese suits that its subsidiary, Proview Electronics, sole the iPad fixing rights to Apple in a ?global trademark? agreement that excludes China. The 2006 understanding was value about $54,000.

According to the Santa Clara County suit, IP Application Development told Proview Technologies in 2009 that it longed for to longed for to purchase, not license, the iPad fixing rights as an shortening of the company?s full name.

Proview claims in its censure that IP Application Development not usually never referred to that it was pursing the trademarks for Apple, it also left out that the iPad name would be used as the product name for an Apple inscription computer.

According to the complaint, a deputy of IP Application Development spoken Jonathan Hargreaves pronounced in an email to Proview that ?IPAD is an shortening for the association name IP Application Development Limited. This is a newly shaped company, and I?m sure you can assimilate that we are not ready to ventilate what the company?s commercial operation is, given we have not yet made any open announcements. As I pronounced in my final message, I can assure you that the association will not contest with Proview.?

In the suit, Proview pronounced Hargreaves was essentially a man spoken Graham Robinson who committed rascal in giving the association an alias when representing IP Application Development. Proview also argues that not disclosing who owned IP Application Development and fibbing about what the iPad name would be used for was fake as well.

Proview was struggling financially in 2009, and still is, due in part to the failure filings of Circuit City, before its largest sell partner, and Polaroid, one of its largest commercial operation partners. The association also attempted to all-in-one desktop and laptop computers underneath the IPAD name, though those attempts never took off.

On Dec. 23, 2009, Proview sole the iPad heading rights to IP Application Development for 35,000 British pounds, or about $55,000 dollars.

On Jan. 27, 2010, Apple famously denounced the iPad, the device that altered personal computing and jump-started a formerly asleep inscription industry.

In its fit opposite Apple, Proview pronounced it is looking for the 2009 agreement in in in in between the two companies to be spoken an bootleg stipulate and that Apple be stricken of the capability to use the iPad trademark.

Over the final couple of months, Proview has sued Apple in mixed Chinese city courts, job for sales bans on the iPad over the purported heading infringement. It has also in jeopardy to sue Apple for as most as $2 billion.

On Thursday, a Shanghai justice incited down Proview?s ask that Apple?s iPad be taken off store shelves in a proxy sales injunction. Last week, the Intermediate People?s Court in the southern Chinese city of Huizhou ruled that iPad sales should be halted until the brawl is resolved. Other rulings have resulted in iPads being pulled off store shelves in northern China as the heading conflict has escalated.

Though the U.S. fit shows a brand brand new turn of charge in the brawl in in in in between the two companies, Proview and its creditors, which include the Bank of China, China Minsheng Banking and China Merchants Bank, have reportedly voiced seductiveness in settling with Apple out of court.

[Updated 3 p.m.: An progressing chronicle of this story wrongly settled that Proview Technologies filed the U.S. legal case agianst Apple Inc. The fit was filed by a subsidiary, Proview Electronics. The story also wrongly settled that Proview purported that Apple owned IP Application Development Limited. Proview, in the suit, alleges that Apple asked a lawfirm to form IP Application Development Limited and squeeze the trademarks on its behalf.]

Liquid Supplements ? Healthy Or Not? | New Health and Fitness

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

Nursing homes and hospitals have long been offering liquid supplements like Boost and Ensure to residents and patients respectively. The past few years have seen these drinks, including Boost and Ensure, marketed to young and old people alike, whether in good health or not.

Aside from the usual demographic of men and women aged 65 and above, liquid supplements have been pushed as a dietary supplement for younger customers, such as businessmen and businesswomen, as well as housewives staying home with the kids. But is it really right to include these products in your diet?

Water, proteins, vitamins and minerals, sugar and oils are the most common ingredients of liquid supplements. There are liquid supplements intended for children as well as older people, and depending on the product, may or may not contain fiber or lactose.

Though the nutritional content on the packaging may be different, some companies offer these supplements in pudding cup or candy bar form.

Many are asking what pushes these food manufacturers to market their products in such a way. Based on our observations, here are a few reasons.

It may surprise you, but a lot of these companies use fear tactics as their main motivation for would-be customers to start buying. The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) consumed by many customers may be less than average for certain nutrients, but this does not always put them in danger of getting sick or acquiring diseases. It would be much better to see a specialist or registered dietitian if you feel your daily food consumption isn?t up to Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) standards. These specialists can easily help you when it comes to determining if you need a dietary supplement or not, liquid or otherwise.

Being healthy requires more than just mere liquid supplements. For instance, scientists are discovering through their research certain ingredients that may help people get healthier to a higher extent. The high content of sugar and unnecessary calories can easily offset all the vitamins, minerals and protein contained in a liquid supplement. This may be of use to older consumers and the original demographic, but not for the average man, woman or child.

Some people, usually older people with medical conditions may find liquid supplements ideal for them, but the younger person may not find it necessary. Furthermore, the cost of an average eight-ounce can of these supplements isn?t really necessary in ones daily food budget.

Find Out The Reasons Why LED Lights In ... - Home Improvement Idea

by Home on Friday, February 24th, 2012 | Comments Off

Even with all the media coverage and exhaustive marketing efforts, limited people have been convinced to to use energy-efficient light products.

In accordance with a report from the Department of Energy, gross sales of CFLs are actually going down since its summit in 2007. Even in Seattle, that is leading a plan to publicize street lamps that use energy-efficient LEDs, consumer want for eco-friendly lights is not impressive. Knowing the activity of a steady retrofitting of LED lights in Seattle, Washington?s 45,000 street lamps, individuals still aren?t flocking to acquire the high-tech lamps.

A transition would be good simply because there won?t be much option soon. There exists now a federal rules that requires producers to roll out light bulbs that produce the same intensity but use less electricity than classic incandescent lights. A phase-in of the completely new law launched January 2010 with 100-watt light sources. Osram Sylvania?s appraisal states that not a lot of people are informed about this ruling, in reality, just 2 in 10 learn about the impending extinction of 100-watt lights. The handful of buyers who are aware of the modification plan to merely stockpile incandescent 100-watt light bulbs while these are still open.

Consumer Reports post blogs jokingly described these clients as ?Lightbulb Luddites.? They continuously reject revolutionary technology even if it?s much better. Probably the cost remains a turn-off but a bit more information can certainly help consumers pick the newer, better choice to incandescents.

The groundbreaking rules actually does not ban any specific lighting technology. Or does it advocate one over another. It just simply entails bulbs to be a little more efficient by 25%. Thing is, traditional incandescent lights can?t match this standard.

The swirly CFLs are a fine technology and that they are working better. But nonetheless halogen and LED bulbs have more pleasing advantages. Obtain halogen or LED lights in Seattle, Washington and you?ll discover that they?re fully dimmable and even come to full vividness promptly. They also don?t include mercury.? While, yes, these particular lights cost you more.

However, understand that whatever utilizes energy has a two-fold cost: the original price and the electricity cost during its lifespan. CFLs win on both counts. In the time you?d update a CFL bulb, you would?ve swapped your original incandescent 10 times by now. Stats for the LEDs are a better choice, as they can last about 50,000 hours with uninterrupted service.

Aside from that, CFLs don?t work well in dimmable control keys. And total intensity is done quite bit by bit still. They also don?t react well in cold temperature.

And since they?re fluorescents, CFLs hold trace amounts of mercury, that could be potentially unhealthy when the bulb breaks. There are indeed ways and methods around this hazard, though. You can take exhausted, unbroken fittings at a Home Depot store, which could wipe out CFLs correctly.

LEDs do not experience any of these disadvantages. And if you need further confirmation, the LED lights project in Seattle, Washington isn?t curbing. The city will be putting up as much as 10,000 more LED streetlights in 2011. It?s also casting a wider net, speaking to all lighting producers to submit a suggestion to get involved with the action.

CDC: Colorectal Cancer Screening Rates are Down - TheCheckup

    Thinkstock

Many people don?t get necessary cancer screening tests, according to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.?

The U.S. Preventative Services Task Force recommend regular screening of both men and women beginning at age 50 for colorectal cancer. However a Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report found the percentage of people being screened for colorectal cancer is significantly lower than estimated.

The report found 58.5 percent of men reported being screened for colorectal cancer. This is significantly lower than the Healthy People 2020 target of 70.5 percent.Whites were significantly more likely to report being up-to-date in screening than blacks or Asians. Hispanics were less likely to report being up-to-date than non-Hispanics.

Among respondents who had been in the United States for less than 10 years; did not have a primary care physician; or did not have health insurance, less than a quarter reported having been screened within the recommended interval. Respondents aged 65?75 years were more likely to be up-to-date than those aged 50?64 years.

Colorectal cancer, cancer of the colon or rectum, is the third most common cancer for men and women and the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States. Men are at a slightly greater risk for the cancer than women. Certain lifestyle factors such as physical inactivity, smoking, obesity and alcohol abuse also contribute to increased risk of colorectal cancer.

Geological cycle causes biodiversity booms and busts every 60 million years, research suggests

    Wednesday, February 22, 2012

A mysterious cycle of booms and busts in marine biodiversity over the past 500 million years could be tied to a periodic uplifting of the world's continents, scientists report in the March issue of The Journal of Geology.

The researchers discovered periodic increases in the amount of the isotope strontium-87 found in marine fossils. The timing of these increases corresponds to previously discovered low points in marine biodiversity that occur in the fossil record roughly every 60 million years. Adrian Melott, a Professor of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Kansas and the study's lead author, thinks these periodic extinctions and the increased amounts Sr-87 are linked.

"Strontium-87 is produced by radioactive decay of another element, rubidium, which is common in igneous rocks in continental crust," Melott said. "So, when a lot of this type of rock erodes, a lot more Sr-87 is dumped into the ocean, and its fraction rises compared with another strontium isotope, Sr-86."

An uplifting of the continents, Melott explains, is the most likely explanation for this type of massive erosion event.

"Continental uplift increases erosion in several ways," he said. "First, it pushes the continental basement rocks containing rubidium up to where they are exposed to erosive forces. Uplift also creates highlands and mountains where glaciers and freeze-thaw cycles erode rock. The steep slopes cause faster water flow in streams and sheet-wash from rains, which strips off the soil and exposes bedrock. Uplift also elevates the deeper-seated igneous rocks where the Sr-87 is sequestered, permitting it to be exposed, eroded, and put into the ocean."

The massive continental uplift suggested by the strontium data would also reduce sea depth along the continental shelf where most sea animals live. That loss of habitat due to shallow water, Melott and collaborators say, could be the reason for the periodic mass extinctions and periodic decline in diversity found in the marine fossil record.

"What we're seeing could be evidence of a 'pulse of the earth' phenomenon," Melott said. "There are some theoretical works which suggest that convection of mantle plumes, rather like a lava lamp, should be coordinated in periodic waves." The result of this convection deep inside the earth could be a rhythmic throbbing?almost like a cartoon thumb smacked with a hammer?that pushes the continents up and down.

Melott's data suggest that such pulses likely affected the North American continent. The same phenomenon may have affected other continents as well, but more research would be needed to show that, he says.
