It?s been ten years since Maryland?s first ?arts and entertainment districts? began operations. The Maryland State Arts Council says they?ve supported 1,600 jobs and $50 million in wages on average annually. But do tax breaks really make a difference for artists? Or do they just want to be where the art is happening, regardless of the incentives?
On Wednesday and Thursday, policy makers and artists from around the country will come to Baltimore for the National Symposium on Arts/Entertainment/Cultural Districts. Mark Stern is the keynote speaker. Since 1994, he has served as a principal investigator for the Social Impact of the Arts Project at the University of Pennsylvania?s School of Social Policy and Practice. Right now, he?s studying ?natural cultural districts? in Baltimore.
Andy Vick is also speaking. As the director of the Allegany Arts Council in Western Maryland, he helped start the Arts and Entertainment Districts in Cumberland and Frostburg.
Today, Tom Hall talks to Stern and Vick about the role of the arts in economic development.
